Darwin

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. It has a population of 120,900, and is the most populated city in Northern Territory. Geographically, Darwin is very close to Indonesia. It makes travelling to Asia easier and quicker and many Australians also travel through Darwin on to Asia.

Darwin has distinct wet and dry seasons and the average temperature is similar all year round. The dry season runs from April/May to October, during which nearly every day is warm and sunny. The wet season is usually from December to March. If you are thinking about the sun - Darwin has the most daily average sunshine hours of any Australian capital with the most sunshine from April to November!

Darwin's population comprises people from many different ethnic backgrounds. The majority are from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the Philippines and the East Timor. 18.3 percent of the city's population was born overseas and more people are migrating to Darwin every year.

Darwin has a strong mining and tourism industry in which tourism employs 8% of Darwin residents and is still expected to grow. Darwin's importance as a port is expected to grow as well. The recent completion of the railway link is also contributing to the continued expansion in trade with Asia.

There are a number of public and private schools in Darwin that care to local and overseas students. There are over 35 primary and pre - schools, and 12 secondary schools including both government and non-government. Darwin's largest University is the Charles Darwin University which is the central provider of tertiary education in the Northern Territory which covers both vocational and academic courses.
